In establishment of lawn seeding, cool season grasses is one of the
most important factors. The correct time to seed the cool-season grasses
lies between august 25 and October 1. The grasses which are seeded around
the Labor Day grows up fast and its growth is completed before the start
of winter and these type of lawns produces a thick appearance.
The lawns that are seeded in late summer are mostly preferred because
during late summer the temperature is warm and it is good enough to promote
the rapid generation and growth of lawns. Young seedlings are mostly developed
and grow at the cool temperatures. Shorter days of the fall were the ideal
situation for the young seedling grasses to grow and develop.
It would be extremely difficult to maintain the cool-season grasses during
spring season. During the time of establishment also there were so many
problems because of growth of weed or excessive crab grass. During summer
the time of summer irrigations in order to prevent the moisture stresses.
During summer there should be a constant watering. But the constant watering
led to the increase in the amount of pythium damping off and brown patch.
In mid-winter season the sod of Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue cannot
be installed because the ground is frozen at that time. During extreme
heat and drought conditions which would happen during summer the sod of
Kentucky bluegrass should be cut and laid. If the turf grasses are to
be seeded in drought conditions means the turf grass seed should be kept
under moist and cool conditions.
Most people prefer the seed because it was less expensive than sod. Although
the seeds are less expensive the establishment is more risky in growing
seeds than sods. There are chances for soil erosion because the time required
to germinate the seed are more. By using the sod, it reduces the use of
more amounts of pesticide and nutrient contamination.
During the first year of establishment the seeding requires the weed control
otherwise the seeds become thin. But sodding has the ability to compete
with the viable weed seed that was already present on the soil.
The soil in which the seeding are required should be prepared and maintained
well and the land is should be leveled.
The high quality sod should be chosen because it would grow actively.
Sods should not remain on pallet for more than a hours because the sods
are perishable. The sod pieces should be rolled tightly against each other.
Seedbed should be kept moist and there should be a depth of 1 to 2 inches
until germination occurs. The soil should not be over irrigated because
it stops the growth of root. |
